Student Advocacy and The Road to Inspiring Excellence: UW Bothell ASME Student Chapter

The University of Washington Bothell’s new Mechanical Engineering program is rapidly developing into an exemplary engineering education . The small class sizes, the drive to encourage students to fully consider the impacts of their engineering choices and the unwavering commitment to technical and creative excellence sets the experience apart from many other campuses.

Professors and students alike over the past year have pushed the limits of what is possible in an engineering program. Although the facilities may be smaller than that of large schools, the drive to cultivate a broad spectrum of undergraduate research projects while encouraging the development of full design life cycles, serves as a testament to the program’s efficacy.

In an effort to provide the best possible mechanical engineers and critical thinkers, that have relevant experience, to local and global industry, UWB holds regular Industrial Advisory Board meetings. There, faculty and industry partners meet with a couple students, myself included, to address program successes and potential places of growth.

We, as student advocates, can take the mission of the Industry Advisory Board one step further through the establishment of an American Society for Mechanical Engineers chapter on campus. Our students desire the opportunity to regularly commune with professional engineers, entrepreneurs and innovators in our community beyond Senior Capstone and internship experiences. That is why we intend to form an ASME chapter.

We seek guest speakers who have a desire and/or curiosity to share their experience. If it’s a five, fifteen or thirty minute presentation, a demo, or an open Q&A we would greatly appreciate your help. Please join us in our effort to increase student advocacy to produce the best possible engineering graduates.
