Information Technology (IT)

Minor in Information Technology

The IT minor focuses on bridging technology and information management by giving students a background in software design methodologies, computer programming, database systems, and strategies for automating industrial and organizational processes.

Required Courses:

  • PREREQUISITE - choose one of:
    • Computer Programming I and II for Engineers (C++): CSS 132 and 133 (2.8 minimum)
    • Computer Programming I and II (Java): CSS 142 (2.7 minimum) and 143 (2.8 minimum)
    • You may take CSS 173 (Programming Theory and Applications) instead of CSS 133 or 143
  • Software Engineering (CSS 360)
  • Database Systems (CSS 475)
  • 5 additional credits (usually 1 course) of 300-level or higher CSS elective work

 

Credit and grade requirements:

  • Minimum of 25 credits
  • Minimum of 15 credits must be completed in residence at UW Bothell campus
  • Minimum grade of 2.0 in each course, unless a higher grade is specified

 


Restrictions

Program restrictions

  • Computer Science & Software Engineering (CSSE) and Applied Computing (ACMPT) students may not earn the IT minor due to the overlap in content.
  • No student may receive more than one minor from the CSS program.

Course restrictions

  • Business students may not use CSS 301 (Technical Writing) or CSS 350 (Management Principles for Computing Professionals) for the CSSE minor's requirements.
  • CSS 332 and 497 cannot be used for the IT minor.

Declaring the IT minor

Admission into the IT minor is not competitive. You may declare the minor with your major advisor, provided that you have completed the prerequisites with the minimum grades. You may not declare a CSS minor with in-progress grades in any prerequisite courses.


Registering for classes

Important note: Due to high demand for these courses, we cannot guarantee that there will be space available for IT minor students.

Graduating with a minor

When applying for graduation, the student's major program advisor will list the minor requirements on the graduation application. Upon graduation, the minor will be indicated on the student's transcript, but it will not appear on the diploma.
