‘Introduction to Game Programming’ Class Scores Big Points
June 7, 2010 — During Spring 2010 the students in CSS 490: Introduction to Game Programming worked in groups of one to four and produced nine high quality 2D games as their final projects. On the day of the final exam the class met in the CSS Windows Lab, invited four CSS alumni that are currently working as game developers as the judges, to play and evaluate the nine games produced. Each of the nine games was fired up on the newly purchased Core i7 machines in sequence such that everyone got to play (or, evaluate) each of the games. To support the difficult and serious game evaluation work, healthy food (vegetable and seven layer nacho dip), plenty of caffeine (Coke and Mountain Dew), and delicious cookies (compliments of a very generous fellow student in class) were provided. Mistaken the serious game evaluation process as part of a "finals-week game festivity" many other CSS students stopped by, enjoyed the food, participated in the game evaluation, and walked away wondering where they can purchase those awesome games! Prof. Munehiro Fukuda Earns Int’l Grant
March 8, 2010 — Prof. Munehiro Fukuda earned support for the UW Bothell/Shizuoka University Sensor-Grid Integration Project from the Maurice D. and Lois Schwartz Endowment for International Education.
Prof. Kelvin Sung Earns Grant
May 26, 2010 — Prof. Kelvin Sung received a UW Bothell Teaching and Scholarship Enhancement Project (TSEP) grant for his proposal, "Transfer success from serious game development to secure support from local industry partner and to transform a lecture-based game to a community-based service learning format". In this project, his group will be developing mobile, augmented reality "serious games" to assess their impact on learning and investigate approaches that cross multiple platforms.
High-Performance Computing Donation
May 12, 2010 — Profs. Kelvin Sung and Michael Stiber received a "Professor Partnership" donation from the NVIDIA Corporation. This gift, consisting of high-performance graphics processing unit (GPU) hardware, will be used to build out the CSS Program’s "hydra" GPU computing platform for undergraduate research and for piloting curricula in multithreaded and parallel computing.
Prof. Alan Leong’s New Publication Coming this Summer
April 20, 2010 — Prof. Alan Leong is the second author of Medarex-Bristol Myers Squibb Company: Realizing It’s Potential?, a chapter within "Building The Case for Biotechnology", a book to be released this coming summer. It assesses the strategic options facing Howard H. Pien, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Medarex, on how to respond to a proposed acquisition offer from Bristol-Myers Squibb in 2009.
CSS Gets a YouTube Channel
April 5, 2010 — The CSS Program is excited to announce the launch of its new YouTube channel. By posting videos of events and activities, such as their speaker series and quarterly colloquiums, the Program hopes to provide a better insight into what makes it so great.
Winter 2010 ‘Bits & Bytes’ CSS Newsletter Hot off the Press
March 26, 2010 — In our Winter 2010 edition, Prof. Frank Cioch discusses his approach to teaching agile and secure software development in his curricula at UW Bothell in our CSS Focus segment. Furthermore, CSS student, Juan Echevarria, explains his ongoing research with his Tulalip Tribe and UW Bothell in our Student Spotlight section. We also explore the new MSCSS Program through the eyes of two MPS and Master students.

Prof. Carol Zander Receives SIGCSE Grant
December 12, 2009 — Prof. Carol Zander, along with her Swedish research group, received a $5,000 SIGCSE special project grant to continue their study in "Informal Learning of Computing by Computing Students". The project is an exploratory investigation into how computer science students learn about computing topics through informal, self-directed learning. Understanding this process could inform our practice of formal education, particularly how we might integrate what and how we teach formally with what students can learn on their own.
Prof. Kelvin Sung Review Article Published in December Issue of Communications of the ACM
December 2009 — Prof. Kelvin Sung publishes a review article titled “Computer games and traditional CS courses” for the December issue of Communications of the ACM. The article discusses how integrating game design into the computer science curriculum might be able to help attract and retain students.
Prof. Olson Presents Paper at 5th International Symposium on Visual Computing
November 30, 2009 — Prof. Clark Olson will be presenting his paper, titled “Robust Registration of Aerial Image Sequences”, at the 5th International Symposium on Visual Computing through November 30, 2009 through December 2, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

New Staff Position: Advanced Systems Engineer
September 15, 2009 — The CSS Program is looking to fill a new position, that of Advanced Systems Engineer. This individual will act as part of the CSS faculty and staff team to design, plan, purchase and/or develop, configure, and maintain our academic computing environment, including undergraduate and graduate teaching labs and our research infrastructure. Prof. Erdly Works with Tulalip Tribes to Develop Rural Broadband Cooperative
September 14, 2009 — Prof. Bill Erdly continues his ongoing collaboration with the Tulalip Tribes, which has seen him participate in the founding of Tulalip Data Services, in the development of the Washington State Rural Broadband Cooperative. His work was recently featured in the Puget Sound Business Journal (check out the photo of Greg Keith, UW Bothell CSS alumnus).

Prof. Zander Returns from NSF Review Panel for CCLI
July 14, 2009 — Prof. Carol Zander just returned from being on a National Science Foundation (NSF) Review Panel for Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) type-1 grant proposals. The panel ran from July 13 through the 14.
Prof. Stiber Elevated to IEEE Senior Member
July 1, 2009 — Prof. Michael Stiber was elevated to Senior Member by the IEEE, the leading professional association for the advancement of technology. This reflects his "professional maturity and significant professional achievements."
