Biography
Dr. Cornick has over 15 years of experience as a faculty member, starting at Connecticut College and for 13 years at Alaska Pacific University, where she founded the Marine Physiological Ecology Laboratory. She was a Senior Policy Fellow for the Marine Conservation Institute, a founding member of the Science Council for the Marine Conservation Institute’s GLORES project, and Society for Conservation Biology Marine Section Board Science Officer. Prior to coming to UW Bothell she was the Associate Dean of STEM at Eastern Washington University for three years.
Research
Dr. Cornick’s research focuses on the physiological ecology of marine mammals, particularly the physiological constraints on behavioral plasticity of foraging in response to anthropogenic changes in the environment. Recent research with both undergraduate and master’s students includes understanding call types of killer whales in the Aleutian Islands as a management tool, and using high-resolution ultrasound to measure blubber stores in beluga whales as a way to assess body composition and the potential impacts of food limitation. Other research interests include the impacts of climate change on access to subsistence marine resources in indigenous communities, and using critical GIS to understand the spatial relationships between humans and a changing marinescape in the Anthropocene.
