Biography

Professor Sommerfeld obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Utah, where his research focused on two areas: coal liquefaction and properties of transition metals within a titano-silicate molecular sieve. He served for 10 years as the Director for Upper Division Undergraduate Laboratories at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. In 2011 he left that position and went to England where he obtained an M.A. in the Conservation of Archaeological and Museum Objects. This program included a year-long placement with the British Museum. Currently, Professor Sommerfeld is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Washington Bothell in the Physical Sciences Division. His primary duties focus on the physical chemistry curriculum and teaching general chemistry laboratories.

Research

Professor Sommerfeld’s research interests include the fate of trace, persistent chemicals in the environment and using chemistry to better understand artistic, anthropological, historical and archaeological artifacts and materials.
