Online Course Work
Adjusting your Assignments
There are a number of ways to adapt existing assignments done in person to submit online. For example:
- In lieu of in-class discussion, use the online discussion in Canvas
- Have students write reflections (essay or discussion post) on a question prompt. Have students post their reflections and respond to their peers’ posts in a discussion board in Canvas.
- Create video lectures (ideally under 8 minutes each) and add quizzes, discussions or other assignments that allow students to review and comment on the video lecture
- To proactively plan for low bandwith issues, we recommend putting up to two weeks of course material in Canvas (LMS) that students can download; and if necessary, allowing students to snail mail their work.
- Rewrite assignments so they can be turned in online as a paper, website link, image, data file or other file.
- Have students share their work and review the work of others by sharing files through Canvas discussion boards or email
- Create student groups in Canvas to facilitate small group discussion and collaborative work around a specific assignment
- Have students use Google Docs to co-create or collaborate around an assignment
