Admit Until Date

Overview

Beginning September 15, 2026, F-1 students entering the United States will receive a specific Admit Until Date (AUD) on their Form I-94 instead of being admitted for Duration of Status (D/S). Under the new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) rule, the date on your I-94 will determine how long you may remain in the United States.

This is a significant change for international students and makes it more important than ever to review your I-94 after every entry to the United States.

What Changed?

Previous Rule: Duration of Status (D/S)

In the past, all F-1 students were admitted for “D/S” (Duration of Status), which allowed them to remain in the United States as long as they:

  • Maintained valid F-1 status
  • Enrolled in a full course load when required
  • Made normal academic progress
  • Followed all employment and immigration regulations

New Rule: Fixed Admit Until Date

Under the new rule, F-1 students will receive a specific expiration date on their I-94. This date will correspond to the length of the academic program listed on the Form I-20 (or your EAD if you have approved OPT), subject to certain limitations, and includes the grace period after your program ends.

Students must ensure they do not stay in the U.S. beyond their AUD, unless they’ve taken action to remain lawfully present.

What if I have changed my status to F-1?

This rule still applies to you, but rather than looking for this information on an I-94 record, you will find it at the bottom of your I-797A, which serves as your approval notice.

Why is the I-94 important?

Your I-94 is your official admission record and now contains a critical deadline.

You should:

  • Check your I-94 after every entry to the United States
  • Verify your name, visa status, and Admit Until Date
  • Keep a copy of your I-94 for your records
  • Contact ISS immediately if the date appears incorrect

Failure to monitor your I-94 admit until date could affect your ability to remain in the United States.

What if I need more time to complete my program?

Some students, especially those in longer degree programs, may need additional time beyond the date listed on their I-94.

In these situations, students may need to:

  • Request an extension of their stay
  • Work with ISS to obtain updated immigration documents
  • Follow applicable USCIS procedures before the I-94 expires

Students should contact ISS well in advance of any expiration date.
