What are CELR courses?
Placement based courses
In placement-based CELR courses, individual or small groups of students volunteer at an organization for a specific number of hours outside of course time. Community-Engaged Learning and research coordinates placement opportunities, and students choose from a pre-approved list of positions posted by community partners. Students also have the option to coordinate their own placement and supervisor. A paid job may not be used for a CELR placement.
Examples include: tutoring programs, public awareness campaigns, generating marketing resources, planting native species, program evaluation, outreach and promotion, etc.
Project based courses
In project-based and research-based CELR courses, students work individually, in small groups, or as a full class on a project or research-based question identified by a community partner in collaboration with faculty. Community partners visit at the beginning of the quarter to pitch projects, and are invited to participate and witness student final presentation at the end of the quarter. Students are expected to work together and with partners outside of course time. CELR provides partners and projects for students and facilitates support as needed.
Examples include: GIS mapping project, statistical analysis, video production, software design, survey development, business plans and consulting, etc.
Self-placements can be used to meet the Community-Engaged Learning and Research requirement for your course IF you have a pre-existing volunteer relationship with an organization, AND the nature of your service work aligns with the learning goals of your course.
