On-Campus Employment

This page is general information for F-1 students only. All F-1 students must also comply with all UWB OEHR policies for student employment.


What Kind of On-Campus positions am I eligible for?

There are a lot of on-campus jobs for students, such as working as a tutor for the QSC or Writing & Communication Center (WACC), or student programs through Student Engagement & Activities Office.

Students have also held positions in academic departments, such as a course grader, research assistant, or student assistant.

How Do I Find an On-Campus Job?

Career Services is the best place to check for current on-campus job opportunities. Information about jobs are listed here and through the weekly email you receive from Career Center called “Career Center News”.

I Found an On-Campus Job! What Do I Do Next?

If your position requires a social security number and you don’t already have one, submit a request for a social security letter. This only applies to F-1 students.


Basic F-1 student information for on-campus employment

  • On-campus employment authorization is automatic. You receive it when you you gain F-1 status.
  • ISS considers all compensation (not just cash payments) provided for your time and services a use of your on-campus employment authorization.
  • On-campus work must perform a service to students on the UWB campus. Please consult ISS if you’re unsure.
  • On-campus employment can be for UWB or an on-campus third party vendor supplying services to students. Please consult ISS if you’re unsure.
  • Employment at UW Seattle, UW Tacoma, and Cascadia College are not permitted.
  • Federal regulations limit you to 20 hours/week while class is in session. Note: Employment with UWB limits you to 19.5 hours/week while class is in session.
  • You are only allowed to work on-campus while you are a registered student or a transfer student that has released their SEVIS record to UWB.
  • You can continue to work on campus while on an annual vacation. Hours can go beyond 20 hours/week if permitted by the employer.
  • You cannot work beyond your program end date.
