IAS faculty member Becca Price published a co-authored paper “Many Paths Toward Discovery: A Module for Teaching How Science Works.”  The paper emphasizes that college students enter science classrooms with a sophisticated understanding of the way scientists test hypotheses.  However, students tend not to incorporate ideas about how science benefits society, nor do they incorporate many community aspects of conducting scientific research.  Dr Price and her colleague, Dr. Kathryn Perez from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, introduce an easy-to-implement classroom activity based on the How Science Works Flowchart that helps students learn the complexity of scientific research.  They conclude that more instruction is necessary to help students—even science majors—incorporate the positive impact that science has on society.
