Online Behavioral Health Training Program

Program Overview

The 100% online Behavioral Health Training Program provides education and skill-based training to improve knowledge and proficiency in topics relevant to the interdisciplinary field of behavioral health. 

The Behavioral Health Training Program is designed for front-line employees in healthcare settings who encounter populations with complex comorbid mental health and substance abuse needs. In addition, the connection of a peer learning community will allow participants to discuss and explore new skills, ideas, and solutions to be integrated into the workplace.

The Behavioral Health Training Program caters to the working professional with 100% online delivery and a variety of learning techniques that engage participants and teach them to apply learning to work place experiences.

 

Program Structure and Training Modules

3 Online Courses

This program provides fundamental behavioral health principles that can be integrated into a variety of settings where patient health conditions are attributable to one or more behavioral health conditions.  Participants will learn about and apply multiple perspectives of the behavioral health process, prevention of relapse, intervention techniques, ethics, communication skills, and foundational knowledge to promote and support quality in care and safety for all in the healthcare setting.  The training program will examine client's care in various primary care settings including office, inpatient, critical care, and long-term care facilities.  Populations to be studied include pediatrics, aging adults, minority, and other vulnerable populations.  Participants maximize their understanding by training across three courses, designed specifically for this program:

Fundamentals of Behavioral Health

The course covers the interdisciplinary field of Behavioral Health and the effects of mental illness, alcohol, and other substance use and misuse, on the brain and body in order to better understand and treat behavioral health (BH) issues. This course discusses the theories that serve as a foundation to understanding behavioral health and the role of a healthcare provider working with BH patients.  Taught by Hoa Appel, Annie Bruck, or Ko Niitsu.

Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders

This course is designed to expand behavioral health literacy by introducing students to a variety of mental health and substance use diagnoses. Material are presented through an interdisciplinary framework, and cover topics including, diagnostic classification, framing diagnoses through a recovery-oriented approach, challenging stigma, history, policy, intervention, and current issues. Taught by Andrea Stone or Daniel Cavanaugh.

Communication, Partnership, and Behavioral Health Across Populations

The final course covers principles and techniques of patient communication and motivational interviewing, with practical strategies to create partnership and trust, to help patients create change, and provide ways to view and address non-compliance, lack of motivation, and hostility. This course stresses the importance of integrative care, and the key aims in healthcare delivery including patients' and providers' satisfaction. The course also applies principles of reflection and communication to promote safe, culturally responsive, and patient-centered care. Participants will learn to apply behavioral health knowledge and skills from the program to promote workplace and community change. Taught by Sunita Iyer or Mo West.
