UW Bothell Assistant and Associate Vice Chancellors (AVCs) in the Academic Affairs Division Roles and Responsibilities
The AVC is responsible for a defined Academic Affairs unit(s) that provides centralized support for faculty, academic staff, and students. This responsibility encompasses all aspects of planning, implementation, assessment, accreditation, advancement, budgeting, personnel management, and other resource management. Reporting to the vice chancellor of Academic Affairs, the AVC oversees the staff (and faculty where relevant) within the unit, while advancing the unit’s mission, values, and diversity and equity plan. The AVC promotes a culture of continuously striving to advance faculty, academic staff, and student success where the status quo is unacceptable.
The AVC has the following categories of responsibilities:
Overall Unit Leadership
The AVC is responsible for all matters relating to the educational, budgetary, and administrative affairs of their units. In these matters the AVC is responsible for faithful observance by the unit of the general policies of the University. AVCs should approach leadership of all matters with an equity lens.
The AVC ensures that the unit’s strategic plan is aligned with the UW Bothell mission, vision, and strategic plan that guide the campus towards providing a leading-edge educational experience. This leading-edge educational experience is founded on three distinctive practices: cross-disciplinarity, connected learning, and community engagement.
Campus Collaboration and Coordination
The AVC serves on the Council of Academic Deans (CAD) in either full capacity or ex officio capacity depending on if they have direct oversight for student progression to degree. This body provides significant advice and recommendations to the vice chancellor of Academic Affairs on core academic matters that cut across schools and other units on campus. AVCs are also expected to coordinate and collaborate with each other and with the Schools, the UW Libraries, the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, Institutional Research, the Division of Advancement and External Relations, Division of Planning and Administration, Office of Diversity and Equity, and other institutional leaders at UW Bothell.
Shared governance of the institution is an important value at UW Bothell. AVCs should collaborate and seek feedback where relevant from the Council of Academic Deans (CAD), General Faculty Organization (GFO), General Staff Organization (GSO), Associated Students at UW Bothell (ASUWB) and other formally-recognized campus advisory councils. AVCs may consider forming internal advisory and/or oversight councils for their units as relevant and appropriate and are encouraged to use existing governance systems when possible.
AVCs are expected to engage in ongoing development and submission of institution-wide grants and to engage with other partnership opportunities that advance their strategic plan. AVCs are also responsible for creating and nurturing opportunities to involve key tri-campus and external partners as they advance the unit.
Professional Engagement and Development
The AVC actively seeks opportunities to advance their own leadership development, clarifies career trajectory pathway with manager, creates individual development plan, and contributes to regional/national communities of practice that are aligned with their units.
Specific 5-year Term Expectations

There are specific expectations for an AVC (administrative faculty only) during each five-year appointment term that will be formally articulated at the beginning of that term.
