Transfer & Graduate Non-Matriculated Credits and Previous UW Coursework Policy and Procedure

Transfer Credit

In accordance with the UW Graduate School Policy, students may transfer up to the equivalent of 6 quarter credits of graduate-level coursework completed at another regionally accredited academic institution (external to the University of Washington). For credits to transfer, they may not have been used to satisfy the requirements of another conferred degree and they must meet the University of Washington’s (UW) Graduate School minimum grade requirement of 2.7. Approved transfer credits are not entered on the UW transcript or counted toward the grade point average. Semester credits will be converted to quarter credits.

All transfer credits require approval by the graduate program to which the student intends to apply the credits and are subject to final approval by the UW Graduate School. Due to core courses meeting specific program learning objectives for credentialing, transfer credits are first considered for application to the program’s elective requirement.

To transfer credit, students may submit a Request for a Transfer Credit Review using the online form or send an email to the Graduate Program Advisor directly to initiate the process. Students will be asked to provide an unofficial transcript(s) and may need to provide additional materials such as syllabi and/or course descriptions to evaluate course equivalency. If credits are approved to transfer, the student will submit an official transcript(s) to the UW Graduate School and the program will submit a petition for final approval on the student’s behalf.

Previously Completed UW Coursework

Coursework completed at UW Bothell, Tacoma, or Seattle, prior to being admitted to the graduate program that has not been applied to a conferred undergraduate or graduate degree is considered “previously completed coursework.” Examples include coursework taken toward a degree not completed or excess courses not applied to the degree. Due to core courses meeting specific program learning objectives for credentialing, all previous UW coursework is first considered for application to the program’s elective requirement.

To request the use of previously taken UW coursework toward the degree, students may submit a Request for Previous Coursework Review using the online form or may send an email to the Graduate Program Advisor directly to initiate the process. Students may need to provide additional materials such as syllabi and/or course descriptions to evaluate course equivalency.

Graduate Non-Matriculated Credit

In accordance with UW Graduate School Policy, students who have taken courses as a UW Graduate Non-Matriculated (GNM) in the degree program, and are later admitted, may apply a maximum of the 12 GNM program credits towards the graduate degree. The 6-year degree completion limit commences at the point of enrollment in the first GNM course. GNM students who also wish to transfer credit hours from another institution outside of UW may apply any combination of GNM credits and up to 6 approved transfer credits totaling no more than 12 credits to be applied toward the degree.
