UW Bothell Worthington Technology Fund

2025-27 Biennium process & guidelines

The UW Bothell Worthington Technology Endowment Fund was established to support the educational and research programs of faculty and students in existing and emerging fields of technology across all schools and majors, including FYPP, through the purchase of capital equipment.

For the biennium 2025-27, the available funding is $100,000. Proposals will be evaluated by the VCAA’s Leadership Council who will advise the VCAA. The VCAA will make the final decision with concurrence from the Chancellor.

  1. Enhance Current Programs: Acquire state-of-the-art equipment to enhance current undergraduate and graduate programs in existing and emerging fields of technology.
  2. Support New Programs: Acquire state-of-the-art equipment for planned/new undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare students to meet the region’s workforce needs in existing and emerging fields of technology. (New programs should be based on third-party market studies.)
  3. Support Faculty Research: Acquire state-of-the-art equipment to support faculty research; centered on existing and emerging fields of technology. (Research includes technology advancement and/or technology application.)

Working timeline

  • Proposal Submission Deadline: Friday, March 7, 2025
  • Funding Announcements and feedback on unsuccessful requests: Friday, April 18, 2025
  • Detailed Expenditure Plans & Timeline for Approved Projects Due: July 1, 2025
  • Funding Availability: July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2027
  • Deadline for first progress report for funded projects: June 30, 2026
  • Deadline for final progress report for funded projects: June 30, 2027

Evaluation criteria

Not in any order of weight or preference:

  • Alignment with campus funding priorities as outlined above
  • Support of UW Bothell mission and advancement of the institution’s excellence in higher education
  • Congruence with campus goals of equity, fairness and student success
  • Feasibility of proposal as detailed in the action plan
  • Support for the UW Bothell Collaboration Principles

Limitations & restrictions

This funding is intended for the purchase of capital equipment and ancillary costs associated with the capital equipment purchase. Capital equipment is defined as having a unit cost of $5,000 or more and a useful life extending beyond one year.

It is the financial responsibility of the school to fund the installation and ongoing labor, maintenance and material costs to run the equipment.

The Worthington Technology Fund is based on temporary funding, and project expenditures should be completed during the 2025-27 biennium. Approved funds not used by June 30, 2027 will be forfeited.

Project reports will be due and reviewed on a annually. If reports are not submitted on time, funding may be withdrawn.

Proposal preparation guidelines

Proposals must be submitted by the school dean to uwbvcaa@uw.edu with the school administrator copied. The submittal must include the dean’s endorsement of the proposal. The proposal should not exceed three pages excluding appendices.

*Note: The proposal’s submission deadline is Friday, March 7, 2025. Submissions after the deadline date will not be considered.

  1. Project overview, rationale and alignment to campus priorities.
  2. Project plan:
    • Timeline: main tasks, key milestones, deliverables and success measures such as ROI
    • Roles and responsibilities for project team members
    • Participating units with sign-off from relevant units (e.g., facilities, EH&S, IT, etc.)
    • Risk assessment and mitigation plan for potential impacts to current services
    • Plan to ensure all associated needs to support the operation and compliance of the equipment are provided in both the short-term and long-term (e.g., support staff, maintenance, EH&S compliance, infrastructure, etc.).

    • Total dollar amount of request and expense timeline
    • Explanation for why no other funding is available for the indicated purpose
