As the director of the department, I wanted to share some important information about the housing program at UW Bothell. As the team leader, I value transparent, positive, open communication on my team – and that starts now as I share this information with you.

The Residential Life program is unique at UW Bothell:

  • UW Bothell entered in a P3 (Public-Private Partnership) with Capstone Development partners in the redevelopment of student housing. Capstone is leasing university land and will own and operating both housing and dining for the university.
  • Capstone contracts “Res Life services” from UW Bothell and that’s where we come in. We have been working closely with our Capstone partners to create a housing program that fits the needs of students.
  • The Residential Life program is growing and transitioning, which means this position will be an integral part of creating Residential Life programming for our new residential village.
  • We have a small, committed team of professionals which mean everyone has a significant voice and role in shaping the program to meet student needs. It also means that relationships and communication are very important.

Residential Life at UW Bothell

A brief history

  • 2009 UWB started offering student housing by leasing a small apartment complex near campus
  • 2011 UWB purchased and began operating Husky Village (existing housing) as student housing (This is when I joined the team and was tasked with developing a Res Life program.
  • 2018 Res Life had the most beds to date (320 residents) in Husky Village and a small off campus leased building. With over 100 students on the waitlist, UWB opened bids with developers in order to provide more beds and improve the on campus housing facilities for students.
  • 2020 Res Life only operated Husky Village for student housing, and housed 130 residents through COVID.
  • 2021 Res Life opened 6 of the 8 halls for a total of 175 residents and had over 200 students on the waitlist.
  • 2021 Capstone Management took over the operations of student housing at UWB and residential life services are contracted through the university. Two buildings were demolished in October to make room for a new residence hall and a dining hall scheduled to open fall 2023.
  • 2023 Summit Hall and the Terrace Dining Pavilion opened for Fall. We have 370 students, 10 Resident Advisors, two Resident Directors all living in housing.

Residential Life team

Starting July 1, 2024, the Residential Life team will include three Resident Directors, an Assistant Director and a Director. Each Resident Director supervises between 6 to 10 of our 26 live-in student positions. Our Resident Advisors and Apartment Advisors work build community and mentor residents, and lead our residential curriculum efforts. Residential Life also employees Desk Assistants who are student employees that run the Residential Life front desk and are supervised by one of the Resident Directors.

We work closely with Capstone Management, specifically our on-site Community Manager, who owns and operates the facilities. The RD on Duty rotation is shared by among the three RDs.

Residential curriculum

We have developed an educational goals and learning outcomes which guide everything we do in Residential Life. This position will be responsible for continuing the implementation and development of the residential curriculum within their hall which will further enhance the learning for our residents.

Fall 2024 Residential Life will be moving to a Student Engagement Curriculum that brings together both Res Life and Student Engagement & Activities.

The Residential Village @ UW Bothell

The Residential Village is our on-campus housing at UW Bothell. This project is a public-private partnership. While the complex is owned and operated by Capstone Develop, the university provides Residential Life, Campus Safety and other services to the complex.     • Horizon Hall will include apartment beds
