Dr. Niitsu named UWB COIL Fellow

Kosuke (Ko) Niitsu, Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing & Health Studies, spent some of his Winter Break reconnecting with friends and family in Japan, as well as delivering a public lecture to the students and faculty of Tokyo Medical & Dental University. Dr. Niitsu’s special seminar covered his current areas of research on vulnerability and resilience during stressful events and natural disasters, and related his experiences as a faculty member at the University of Washington Bothell.

Thanks to his international efforts, Ko has been selected as a UWB COIL Fellow for the 2020-2021 academic year. He joins Assistant Professor Meghan Eagan-Torkko and Senior Lecturer Maureen (Mo) West as COIL Fellows from Nursing & Health Studies. Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is an approach to fostering global competence through development of a multicultural learning environment that links university classes in different countries. Using various communication technologies, students complete shared assignments and projects, with faculty members from each country co-teaching and managing coursework. UW Bothell’s COIL is based on and has benefitted from the resources based at its original school, the State University of New York (SUNY). Through this initiative, UW Bothell continues to deepen global engagement of students in the classroom, without requiring travel abroad, by implementing online collaboration with international partners.
