Jay on Mentorship

"Working with young professionals and helping them believe in themselves to build self confidence and achieve their full potential is very rewarding. By sharing my my career trajectory through the EDGE mentorship program, I can help students as they explore career paths that will fulfill their aspirations and life goals. I do this by sharing my career trajectory, successes and failures. I take them through how my career passion was a guiding light for moving beyond entry level positions into executive level positions. I focus on failures as much as successes to express the need for moving beyond perceived limitations. Through this, the students help me view and think about the current business environment they face in different ways. I get as much or more out of the mentoring sessions than the students, but my goal is to make each session as rewarding and enriching an experience as possible for the students. "

“Mentorship has always been important to me. My first exposure to mentorship was in a coach capacity, teaching kids how to play tennis and then going on to coach volleyball at my alma mater, Woodinville High School. While attending UW Bothell, I had the opportunity to serve as the head of the BOLD organization’s Marketing team, which stands for Business and Organizational Leadership Development. During this time, I interfaced with faculty and C-suite executives of local companies to transform the lives of students, bringing them into real world and professional experiences. This organization gave me confidence in myself as a student and aspiring professional while connecting me with an internship at Simplicity Consulting that paved my way forward. Now graduated and finding purpose in my career, I enjoy mentoring students from high school to early on career professionals by providing tips on interviewing, networking and building confidence in yourself.”

He partners with them in many aspects of their financial lives and takes his role as an investment advisor very seriously. Jason takes great pride in navigating each client through the best and worst economic times.

He purchased his first mutual fund at fourteen years old and his first stock at age eighteen.

As the son of two educators its in his blood to never stop learning. Looking for a challenge, Jason started his post-secondary education the at United States Air Force Academy. After two successful years he confirmed finance, not flying, was the career for him so he transferred to the University of Washington and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. In addition, he’s obtained the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC) and Chartered Retirement Plans Specialist (CRPS) designations from the College for Financial Planning. Most recently he’s continued his education at Yale University with a two year executive program focusing on risk premia and efficient portfolio management. Jason and his wife, Katie, spend most of their days chasing around their two boys, Bear and Kingston. They enjoy loading the boys in backpacks and hiking until they run out of daylight or energy, whichever comes first. Board-games, puzzles, movies, and BBQ’s are part of a typical weekend at the Therrell’s. They are a family who loves their Northwest teams, but most of all, they simply appreciate spending time with family and friends.
