Academic advising & appointments
How do I schedule an advising appointment?
You can schedule a 30-minute appointment through our online scheduler EAB Navigate.
Is drop-in advising available?
Yes, drop-in advising is available both in-person and via Zoom. Your advisor will have scheduled times so please check on Navigate for that schedule. We have Peer Advisor drop-ins available daily as well, please see our Drop-In page for more information.
Who is my academic advisor?
Students are assigned an advisor based on their academic interests. You can find your advisor’s information in Navigate.
Can I receive advising support via email?
Yes, you can email your advisor directly through Navigate or email our general inbox at uwbadvis@uw.edu with your UW ID number and a brief explanation of your question. An advisor will respond within 2–3 business days.
Choosing a major
How do I explore potential majors at UW Bothell?
Start by reviewing the list of undergraduate majors and visiting departmental websites for more information. You can also contact your advisor if you have questions.
When can I declare a major?
Some majors are open and can be declared at any time, while others have prerequisites or competitive admissions. Consult with your advisor to determine the best time to declare.
What’s the difference between a major and a minor?
A major is your primary area of study and typically requires more credits, while a minor is a secondary field of study with fewer requirements. Learn more about majors and minors.
How do I choose a major?
Consider your academic strengths, interests, and career goals. Taking introductory courses and speaking with faculty, advisors, and Career Services can provide insight.
Courses & registration
How do I register for classes?
Use the Time Schedule or MyUW to find courses and register through Register.UW.
What if the course I want is full?
Consider alternative courses or sign up for seat notifications. Some departments have specific policies for full classes. Consult your advisor for guidance.
Can I change my grading option to Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory (S/NS)?
Yes, you can choose the S/NS option for elective courses but required courses for your major or graduation must be taken for a numerical grade. Be sure to contact your advisor to learn more about your options.
How do I drop a class?
You can drop classes through MyUW. Be mindful of deadlines and potential impacts on your academic progress.
Where can I find information on study abroad options?
Visit the Study Abroad office and consult with your advisor to determine how your study abroad courses will apply to your degree.
Academic support & resources
What are the Discovery Core (B CORE) courses? Are they required?
Discovery Core (B CORE) are courses designed for first-year students to engage in integrated learning across disciplines and develop academic skills. All First-Year students are required to take B CORE. Transfer students who are admitted to a major with 90+ credits are not required to take B CORE.
Do I have to take a math class?
It depends on your intended major. Some majors require math courses, while others offer alternatives to fulfill the reasoning requirement.
How do I know which math class to take?
UW Bothell uses a Math Directed Self-Placement (DSP) process to help students choose the appropriate math course. You can also contact your advisor.
Where can I get help if I’m struggling academically?
UW Bothell offers many kinds of academic assistance, including the Writing & Communication Center, the Quantitative Skills Center, Academic Success Coaching, and the Open Learning Lab.
