Capstones are cornerstones for IAS grads

IAS student and Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies (GWSS ) major Ila Plank (formerly Samantha Plank) published “Kiss the Girl: Growing Up a Lesbian in the Age of Trump” in the local Seattle paper, The Stranger. The article reflects on Disney movies and the sexual dissent after the Trump election.

Students receive career mentoring through networking trek
On November 22, sixteen UW Bothell students caught a glimpse of their future. IAS students engage in multi-media production
Students in Kristin Gustafson’s Multi-media Storytelling in Student Media class produced three live UWave radio shows focused on climate change, international student experience, and tuition. These two-way radio productions involved the BISMCS472 students talking with one another on air about their journalism reporting for the Husky Herald. In addition to the radio shows, the news story about climate change appeared in the December/January Husky Herald issue distributed this week. Savita Krishnamoorthy receives Alpha Kappa Alpha Foundation Scholarship

This year six GWSS faculty, one undergraduate major, and the GWSS librarian all attended the 40th annual National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) conference. Professor Julie Shayne organized a session titled “Using Feminist Pedagogy to Mobilize Knowledge: Zines, Museums, Peer Education, & Pop Feminism.” The panel showcased the work of UWB faculty, staff, and students. Jin-Kyu Jung leads study abroad trip to South Korea and establishes ties with local institutions
IAS faculty member Jin-Kyu Jung recently returned from South Korea with 9 UW students from the Bothell and Seattle campuses. This trip was part of an Early-Fall Student Abroad program, “Mapping Communities in the Smart City,” co-led with Gunwha Oh (affiliate faculty in IAS and lecturer in the Deptartment of Geography).

UWave Radio: ‘Your voice, your vibe’
Radio hardly describes all the media, programming, and community building that takes place through UWave Radio, the campus station. “Our students are learning the cutting edge of where digital broadcasting is going. It’s multimedia. It’s live and archived, and it’s engaging specific communities because that’s how media works,” says IAS faculty member and adviser Amoshaun Toft.
