Laura Halpin credits interdisciplinary education for her success as international policy consultant

IAS Early Grad Laura Halpin (’93) enrolled at UW Bothell with set her sights on an international career. Today she draws heavily from her Liberal Studies foundation to address complex social policy issues as a development consultant and lecturer to European institutions. “No matter which courses I took,” she recalls, “we were always discussing across disciplines ways in which to achieve social justice and effect ethical change. I’ve built it in to everything I do to this day.”

Alumni Shout Out!

Whitney Corthell (’16) begins graduates studies at the UW School of Social Work this fall with plans to work as a counselor serving populations with low access to mental health care. Byron Dill (’10) opened The Dill Agency, an Allstate agency in Woodinville. Marvin Eng (’15) is district representative for Congressman Adam Smith in Washington’s 9th Congressional District. David Gantz (’10) has established Gantz Law, which specializes in real estate and property law. Samantha Penjaraenwatana (’15) is graduate coordinator for First-Generation College Student Initiatives at Seattle University.

Frances Lee discusses the power of citation in activist writing

In their article “It Is Just Me, Or Does Activist Writing Need A Citational Practice?,” Cultural Studies alum Frances Lee discusses citing as an exercise of power. Says Lee, “When we fail to give credit to the authors of the ideas we are building upon, we are preventing people from being acknowledged for their gifts, and even robbing them of the ability to get paid.”

Neil Low named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year

The UW Bothell Alumni Council has selected IAS alum Neil Low (’03) as Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in acknowledgement of his lifetime achievements. Low is a 50-year veteran of the Seattle Police Department and author of seven detective novels. Due out this summer, his eighth book, “Crazy Love,” is a fictionalized version of the death of Kurt Cobain.

Diane Weber stays politically engaged through Democrats Abroad

After a long career in public service, IAS alum Diane Weber relocated to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. For many retirees, a life of leisure ensues, but Weber’s political work keeps her quite occupied. After the 2016 election, she felt compelled to take action and joined Democrats Abroad, the official Democratic Party arm for the millions of Americans living outside the United States. Mary Howisey leads Alumni Council’s Husky 5K efforts

On Saturday, May 18, more than 1,300 walkers, strollers, joggers and runners will take to the streets of Bothell for the 14th Annual UW Bothell Husky 5k. Since the first race in 2006, proceeds from the Husky 5k have resulted in more than $160,000 for scholarships.
