IAS faculty pass resolution in support of UWave

On June 6, 2017, IAS faculty unanimously passed a resolution in favor of continued campus support for the UWave Radio Station, citing its impact on students in terms of learning, expression, and community connections. The full text of the resolution follows.
Resolution of the Faculty of the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences,
UW Bothell,
in Support of Regaining an FCC License for UWave Radio
WHEREAS the faculty in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences support student-led media as part of a vibrant campus community; and
WHEREAS engagement with co-curricular activities is known to increase persistence to degree, especially for first-generation students and students from disadvantaged communities; and
WHEREAS we have witnessed and supported the rise of UWave radio since its establishment in 2011 as a center for community engagement, professional development, and social justice; and
WHEREAS the radio station has given students invaluable hands-on experience in media production and budget and operational planning; and
WHEREAS drawing support from faculty and staff across campus, the station has given voice to diverse and underrepresented groups of students; and
WHEREAS UWave was awarded a low-power FM license from the Federal Communications Commission after arduous work from students, faculty, and staff and was developing what promised to be a lasting contribution to the university community; and
WHEREAS we are dismayed to learn that the Chancellor has cancelled the FCC license and decided not to install an FM radio station at the University of Washington Bothell; and
WHEREAS this decision and the abrupt manner in which it was announced do a disservice to the hard work that members of our campus community have put in on such a vital project for more than five years;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we urge the Chancellor to file a Petition for Reconsideration to the FCC and make any other possible effort to repossess the license for UWave; and
BE IT RESOLVED that we continue to support efforts to build local, independent, and student-run media at the University of Washington Bothell.
