Employee engagement survey

Dear Colleagues,

As many of you know, my office and the Engagement Planning Group worked with the Office of Organizational Excellence and Human Resources (OEHR) in the spring to conduct an Employee Engagement (faculty and staff) survey. This survey was administered by the firm Modern Think. The anonymous feedback is intended to inform our next steps in refocusing and prioritizing our work at UW Bothell and to help us understand how we as colleagues feel about our work environments. I want to provide you with an update and some next steps.

Survey Results
We recently received the results and I was very pleased with the 52 percent response rate and to see strengths that can be celebrated, like the level of pride we feel in the work we do, as well as the sense of a shared understanding of and commitment to our mission.

The survey results also identified several areas of concern. We view these as opportunities to improve. I want you all to know that I, personally, am committed to this work. Through this process, I have identified several areas where I and the Vice Chancellors can improve. These include having greater transparency, a deeper commitment to communications and sharing vision and strategies, breaking down silos between areas, and cultivating a stronger and more cohesive team. We are dedicated to utilizing the results in developing and implementing positive changes that will directly impact our work environments.

Communicating Results
As indicated in previous emails regarding this survey, OEHR and a campus engagement planning group worked together to administer the survey. The results will be shared with the campus in the coming weeks to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to review and understand them. Please see the attached Engagement Communication Flow and Engagement Project Plan documents which help provide transparency on how this information is being communicated and the plan moving forward.

At our Town Hall meeting (open to all faculty and staff) on October 20th, we will introduce key findings and discuss together how we can all make a positive difference for UW Bothell and for each and every member of our community.

Action Plans
Unit-specific results will be shared by deans and department leads with the support of OEHR. As they review the results with their teams, I am asking these leaders to work with you to identify changes that can provide immediate results, as well as action plans they and their units/schools will commit to working on over the academic year and beyond. There will also be additional opportunities to help with addressing campus-wide improvement needs.

Attached is a more detailed schedule for the work to be done, including creation of an online site which will have results, tools, and events. Stay tuned for regular messages from me and others.

We will complete the next Employee Engagement Survey in May 2018. These results will guide us as we develop our strategic plan for 2020 and beyond, and help us evaluate the success of the 21st Century Campus Initiative strategic plan.

I want to thank everyone who continues to help in facilitating this process, those who completed the survey and everyone who will invest time and energy in moving from data to positive outcomes.

As a campus, we dedicate our work to our students, and the communities we serve. We will also reaffirm our commitment to the well-being of each and every member of the UW Bothell community. It is my belief that as a campus community each of us will do all that we can to effect the kinds of changes necessary.

I look forward to working with you on this in the days and months ahead.
