Participation & requirements
What if I change my intended major?
If you switch to a non-tech or non-engineering major, we’ll work with you to smoothly transition out of STARS.
What happens if I miss a mandatory event?
We expect scholars to be active participants, but we understand life happens. If you can’t attend, notify a STARS staff member as soon as possible.
Can I work a part‑time job and be in STARS? What is the weekly time commitment?
Yes! Many scholars work part-time while enrolled full-time. It’s challenging but doable. Expect 1–3 hours per week for STARS activities, including seminar, community events, and tutoring.
Do I have to live on campus?
No, living on campus is not required. However, many STARS scholars choose to live in campus housing for convenience and community.
Academic support & advising
How does STARS interact with the Academic Advising center?
STARS has a dedicated senior advisor who knows tech and engineering requirements. They’ll help you create a course plan to stay on track for major admission by the end of sophomore year.
What if I struggle academically while in STARS?
We’re here to help! STARS offers tutoring, mentoring, advising, and frequent check-ins to keep you on track.
Opportunities & Eligibility
Does STARS help with internships and research opportunities?
Yes! We partner with Career Services and the Office of Connected Learning to connect you with internship and research opportunities on and off campus.
I have AP/IB/college credit for Calculus I — am I eligible?
Unfortunately, no. STARS requires all scholars to take Stretch Calculus I in their first quarter as part of the cohort experience.
