Associate Professor Emeritus

After thirty years as a faculty member, Dr. Steven Collins retired on July 1, 2023. As a founding faculty of its Mechanical Engineering program, he taught thermodynamics, heat transfer, HVAC, sustainable energy, and engineering ethics. He is a licensed Professional Engineer and keeps his license active in the states of New York and Washington. After an early career as an industrial process engineer, Dr. Collins went on to earn graduate degrees in Foreign Affairs with a focus on East Asia. He made many visits to Japan over the course of his career, having affiliations with Ehime University in Matsuyama, Japan, and the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy in Tokyo. Among his happiest memories are times spent leading UW Bothell students on study-abroad courses at Ehime University. Now retired, he works on various projects in his areas of interest, volunteers as a science teacher at a homeschool coop, and serves on a nonprofit board dedicated to preserving the history and quality of life of his local community. He most enjoys walks in nature with his wife of 40 years, operating his amateur radio station, and honing his Morse Code skills.
