Teaching Interests

I am a first generation college graduate and immigrant to the US with many other identities, and I try to understand and practice the pedagogical techniques that foster an inclusive classroom so that I can reach students with different learning styles, different academic foundations, different socio-cultural perspectives, and varied lifelong aspirations. And, I continue to learn. My goal as a teacher is to provide the type of classroom environment that a) acknowledges the assets that every student brings to a course, b) incorporates projects (ideally those for real communities) as an integral part of the learning process, and c) encourages both individual and team opportunities so that students develop professional skills and competencies.

Research and Scholarship Interests

My research applies a systems approach to sustainable infrastructure. Many of my project teams include undergraduate research students who jointly publish and present our work. Currently my main projects are a) designing sustainability and resiliency policies for infrastructure systems affected by climate change by centering environmental justice, and b) advancing the ethics of care to promote sustainable engineering.

Creative Interests

Hiking, cycling in places I’ve never been, lots of movies, restaurants in neighborhoods I’ve never been, and playing with my grandkids.
