Smart Cities in South Korea: My Experience in Navigating Smart Infrastructure by Manuel Garnica

What began as a four week study abroad program in South Korea became an opportunity for Manuel to rethink both technology and his own perspective. During his time in Seoul, Sejong and Busan, he explored how Smart Cities are designed while reflecting on how new environments can challenge long held assumptions.

Through site visits and seminars, Manuel learned how Smart City technologies support everyday life, from public transportation and city planning to tools that help manage congestion and public spaces. Visiting the Eco Delta Smart City pilot district in Busan and experiencing daily life in each city gave him a deeper understanding of how technology and urban design can shape communities.

Beyond the classroom, Manuel connected with local students, explored Korean culture and discovered a greater appreciation for slowing down and embracing new experiences. His story reflects how Global Initiatives can provide UW Bothell students with opportunities to expand their perspectives through immersive learning and meaningful cultural exchange.
