Finding Myself in Sydney: A Solo Study Abroad Journey by Michaela Tiya
For Michaela, studying abroad in Sydney, Australia was an opportunity to embrace independence and experience a new country on her own terms.
While taking courses in the heart of Sydney, Michaela explored beyond the classroom by hiking the Blue Mountains, walking the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Trail and visiting iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House. Traveling solo encouraged her to step outside her comfort zone, build confidence and appreciate the freedom to create an experience that was entirely her own.
From meeting kangaroos and koalas to exploring new cities and connecting with people along the way, every experience helped shape her perspective.
Michaela’s story reflects how Global Initiatives can empower UW Bothell students to broaden their horizons, immerse themselves in new cultures and return home with greater confidence and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
