Staff FAQ
UW Bothell staff members have important roles in assisting students through the graduation process and ensuring the success of our commencement exercises. The ceremony cannot run smoothly without the invaluable contributions of time and energy by you and many other UW Bothell staff. Your work to make this the “Best Day Ever” for students is much appreciated.
Iām a staff member at UW Bothell and would like to work on Commencement day. How do I sign up?
The form to work commencement will be emailed in late February/early March of each year.
Is there a training?
All Commencement staff are invited to attend a training session in June of each year. Training times vary depending on volunteer area. More details will be sent specific to the duty you are assigned.
When do I arrive?
Each job duty has a specific time. Please be sure to allow plenty of time for travel, traffic, finding a parking spot and walking to the Alaska Arena. Your timeliness is essential to the success of the day.
Where should I park?
Parking is available in lot E18, and you will receive a validation parking code prior to your shift. The light rail station is right out front on the Alaska Airlines Hec Ed Pavillion and buses frequent the area which is the preferred way to travel that day.
Where do I go on Commencement Day?
When you arrive at the Alaksa Airlines Arean, you are asked to enter through the rolling doors on the path to Dempsy Hall on the north side on the south side. You will be provided a map of the parking and check in areas. Check-in, gather your credential, and follow the signs to the Staff Lounge.
Is food provided?
Yes, food is provided in the staff lounge area. Breakfast and snacks for the morning shift are provided, and Lunch will be provided to those coming for the afternoon shift and those that stay for the duration of both ceremonies.
When will I work?
Shifts range from 7 a.m. ā 6:30 p.m.
How long is the ceremony?
Each ceremony is expected to be 1.5- 2 hours long.
What do I wear?
You represent UW Bothell, so please dress appropriately. You will be provided a polo shirt to wear at the ceremony. We request that all Commencement staff wear black pants or skirt ā if you are assigned a walkie talkie, you will be more comfortable with a belt loop. Please keep in mind that it is warm inside the arena, but may be chilly outside. Dress in layers. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes. Please no jeans or shorts. All staff will be provided with credentials.
