First Year

Welcome to the University of Washington Bothell! As a new student, you now have access to many valuable resources. We are excited to connect you with these resources and will provide you with the necessary support to promote your success.

Course placement process

In order to register for some classes, you will need to complete the Directed Self-Placement. The philosophy behind the Directed Self Placement (DSP) model is to provide students with agency and choice, knowing that with the right guidance and information on the program and course options, most students will make good placement choices.

All DSPs will need to be completed at least 48 hours before your Advising & Orientation session:

Discovery Core

These FYPP courses are designed to equip you with the skills needed to succeed in the 21st-century workforce and to contribute meaningfully to your local, regional, and global communities. The Discovery Core (DCX)—a required sequence of courses for first-year students—will strengthen your capacity for active learning, critical and creative inquiry, engagement with diverse perspectives, quantitative reasoning, writing, interdisciplinary thinking, and communication across multiple media platforms.

Advanced coursework

UW Bothell encourages and applauds students who have chosen to take advanced courses as part of their high school curriculum. These courses are challenging and demanding, and we believe they provide excellent preparation for university study. Here you’ll find information on transferring AP, IB or A-Levels coursework.

Advising

UW Bothell Academic Advising is your go-to place for connecting with our undergraduate academic advisors. If you have questions or need help, they will guide you to the right advisor! Advisors can help with:

  • Degree planning
