Funding Roadmap
Paying for your graduate education requires a strategic approach. We have gathered the best institutional and external resources to help you identify scholarships, assistantships, and financial aid.
Institutional funding
Start your search with opportunities specific to the University of Washington Bothell and the broader University.
- Graduate assistantships: Many graduate students find support through teaching, research or administrative assistantships. These roles often provide a stipend and tuition waiver. Learn about assistantship types and eligibility.
- Scholarship awards: The University offers several merit- and need-based scholarships. Review the list of current UW Bothell scholarships to see which match your background.
- Tuition exemptions: If you are a state employee or Washington National Guard member, you may be eligible for a tuition waiver. Review the registrar’s policies on tuition exemptions.
- Emergency aid: If you experience unexpected financial hardship, the University provides emergency aid resources to help you stay on track.
*Understanding assistantships vs. scholarships: Assistantships provide a stipend and tuition waiver in exchange for research, teaching or administrative services. Scholarships are merit- or need-based “gift aid” that does not require University employment.

Specialized search tools
Use these directories to find funding tailored to your specific field of study or identity.
- Graduate Funding Information Service (GFIS): This service helps graduate students locate grants, fellowships and scholarships. You can request a consultation with the GFIS team for personalized help.
- UW scholarship search: Use the Office of Academic Affairs database to filter for awards that support graduate research and study.
*Strategy tip: Don’t just search for “graduate scholarships.” Search for your specific professional affiliation or your specific area of research interest. Niche scholarships have significantly less competition.
*Watch for scams: Legitimate scholarships will never ask you for an application fee. If a site requires payment to apply for an award, it is likely a scam.
External resources
These national and state databases list thousands of private scholarships. Because these are broad tools, we recommend setting aside time each week to filter for niche awards.
- The WashBoard: This site matches Washington residents with scholarships specific to our state.
- National databases: Explore broad funding opportunities through Fastweb, Scholarships.com and FinAid.
The Funding Timeline
- Fall: Search for fellowships and grants for the following academic year.
- Winter: Apply for departmental assistantships and internal awards.
- Spring: Focus on external/private scholarships and finalize loan counseling.
Writing/Grant Support
Often, graduate funding requires a narrative statement. Here are some resources to help you succeed in the application:
- UW Bothell Writing and Communication Center
- GFIS Workshop: The GFIS library staff offers workshops on writing grant proposals.
