Research and Scholarship Interests

My research centers on symptom science, with a long-term goal of creating nonpharmacological interventions for pain and symptom management in cancer and chronic illness. In a two-arm randomized controlled trial, my research team tested recorded hypnosis and relaxation interventions for chronic pain in cancer survivors. Both hypnosis and relaxation significantly reduced pain, interference, and anxiety, while hypnosis also improved fatigue and sleep. Recently, I co-led a pilot study on a mindfulness recording to reduce test anxiety and improve heart rate variability in UW Bothell undergraduates (Co-investigator: Dr. Bryan White, STEM). Results were promising for lowering test anxiety, though larger trials are needed.
