Teaching Interests
A writing class might seem straightforward, but to write is to discover your thinking, to attempt to capture it and make it visible, and that’s difficult work. In my classes, we examine the craft of language, the ways that writing shapes representation, and how communication both reflects and creates reality. One of my primary goals in writing instruction is to help students build confidence in their voices and adaptive fluency across a variety of discursive contexts.
Research and Scholarship Interests
My scholarly work has drawn on methods of critical discourse analysis and participatory qualitative research to examine health and medical rhetorics, technology use/UX, inclusive design practices, and activist narratives. I am broadly interested in how individual people negotiate language, power, and representation within larger institutions.
Creative Interests
I write and publish creative nonfiction, including braided essays, hybrid memoir, autotheory, flash and micro nonfiction. I also make mixed media objects, working with clay, felt, and lino/block prints.
