Teaching Interests
Within my studio art classes, I provide guidance for students to develop their own artistic voice and help them to contextualize their work within historical as well as contemporary movements. It is my goal to foster this voice and overall enthusiasm for the medium while building a foundation of trust and safety.
While I provide structure and framework for the class, I place emphasis on self-directed learning as a means to develop a student’s conceptual skills. The interests and knowledge that each individual brings with them creates a richer classroom community and informs the work they make. I also strive to engage students with the broader campus and local community through events and resources available to them. I value self-reflection as a part of a developing artistic practice. For each project, students reflect on their ideas and visual choices. This self-assessment aids students in identifying areas for growth and in creating personal goals that can last beyond the classroom.
Research and Scholarship Interests
My artistic practice explores themes of identity, community, and performance. Through my photographic projects, I examine how identity is performed and can be made visible. I have an interest in questions of authorship and the ways in which this intersects with the power dynamics of the photographer/sitter relationship. While my primary focus is in photography, I also have experience in printmaking and book arts.
