UW Bothell Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Mini-Grant

The UW Bothell Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Mini-Grant Program provides funds for professorial track faculty (tenure, teaching, research, and WOT), artist-in-residence, lecturers on annual or multi-year appointments, and librarians to conduct small-scale, systematic inquiries into teaching and student learning. The program is designed to help instructors investigate a focused question about teaching or student learning, pilot a new instructional practice or assessment approach, and generate preliminary evidence for a larger project, presentation, or publication. Awardees are expected to work with the Learning & Teaching Collaborative to share their findings with the UW Bothell teaching community.

Mini-grant scope

Projects can be exploratory in nature, or they can involve a more developed project with a defined research question, methods, and assessment plan. Examples of eligible exploratory projects include (but are not limited to) piloting a student survey or interview protocol, assessing the effectiveness of a rubric on measuring a targeted learning outcome, or piloting a new instructional approach. Examples of a more developed eligible project include (but are not limited to) examining how changes in methods impact student learning, comparing student performance before and after a redesigned assignment or course, and investigating student experiences in different learning environments.

Eligible expenses

Funds may be used for project expenses directly connected to the approved inquiry. Examples of eligible expenses include (but are not limited to) paying student research assistants, participant incentives (subject to UW requirements), project supplies, instructional materials, data collection and analysis expenses, and dissemination costs or registration for an approved teaching-and-learning event. Faculty or librarian salary, expenses incurred before the award start date, and unrelated conference travel are not allowable.

Application

The Office of Faculty Success will provide up to $1000 per award. UW Bothell faculty and librarians are eligible to receive one SoTL Mini-Grant per academic year. Funding decisions are based on the merits of each proposal, with priority given to those who have not previously received the award. Awards will be distributed evenly across the fall, winter, and spring quarters to ensure availability throughout the academic year. Applications will be reviewed each quarter on a rolling first-come, first-served basis until all funds are exhausted.
