Building Communities: Ideas from Art and Music Festivals

A Discovery Core Experience

May be taken as BCORE 115 (Social Sciences)

About This Course

What can making art and throwing parties at Burning Man, Shambhala, Electric Forest, Beyond Wonderland, etc. teach us? We will look at lots of cool art and parties, but our focus will be on how communities make these happen. We’ll use Burning Man as a case study and learn how Burning Man camps recruit and induct new members, organize work, motivate each other, and mediate conflict.

We will then turn our attention to our own communities here at UW Bothell. Working in small groups, students will write a brief case study of a UWB student club or organization of their choice. Students will reflect on how communities are built as well as working in their own groups.
