University of Washington Bothell students Ariana Navarro and Charity Akhidenor have been recognized for their civic engagement with awards from the Washington Campus Compact, a coalition of 37 two- and four-year colleges.

The 2019 Presidents' Civic Leadership Awards were presented at the Students Serving Washington Awards Ceremony April 19 at The Museum of Flight in Seattle.

Navarro, a senior in Business Administration, has served two years as president of the Rotaract Club, which is sponsored by the Rotary service club. Rotaract members have made scarves and assembled supplies for homeless people, packaged relief kits for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico, and collected food donations for the community and the student Husky pantry.

Navarro also serves in the Associated Students of the University of Washington Bothell as senator of internal affairs.

Akhidenor, a senior in Health Studies, has worked three years as a Health Educator Reaching Out (HERO), a peer educator in Recreation & Wellness. Akhidenor has raised awareness for the Husky Pantry, led stress-reducing mindfulness exercises and organized a fashion show to promote body acceptance. She helped collect data for research on branch campus student health conducted by Associate Professor Jody Early and lecturer Hoa Appel in the School of Nursing & Health Studies.

Akhidenor also contributed marketing ideas to the Arcora Foundation to promote better oral health for Latina Expectant mothers.
