Faculty recognized for mentoring undergraduate researchers

Every year, University of Washington undergraduates from all three campuses present their work at the Undergraduate Research Symposium. At the same time, participants are asked to nominate an outstanding faculty research mentor. This year, our very own Professor Douglas Wacker was among five other research mentors to receive the prestigious University of Washington Undergraduate Research Mentor Award.

Wacker is no stranger to bringing meaningful experiences while mentoring successful students at UW Bothell. Recently, three UW Bothell students studied the behavior of crows under his mentorship. All three student researchers were awarded scholarships to the annual Society for North Western Vertebrae Biology regional meeting, where they presented their research on crow vocalizations.

Wacker’s research and work with undergraduate students engages students and reflects UW Bothell’s commitment to high impact learning.

That commitment is shared among all faculty at UW Bothell. On May 8, 2015, this campus also held an Undergraduate Research Symposium and award ceremony for faculty mentors.

Dr. Lori Robins was awarded the UW Bothell’s Undergraduate Research Mentor Award, with Dr. Pierre Mourad and Dr. Doug Wacker receiving honorable mentions. There was a common thread among nominations of these outstanding faculty members. Students say the mentors stood out because of their dedication to student research and their passion for helping students succeed. Chancellor Yeigh and Congresswoman Suzan DelBene were on hand to present the awards. They later participated in the opening of the Student Success Art Center.
