MFA: Creative Writing and Poetics
B.A. Media and Communication Studies, University of Washington, Bothell
In life, my inability to find a quote that summarizes myself has always been in the back of my mind. As I grew, I realized there was no one quote that would perfectly define me. Then I found a quote by Shia LaBeouf and I knew I was wrong, there is a perfect saying. He says, “I don’t know, I just want to be happy. I could be in a hole somewhere. Or I could completely lose it and be some hippy living in the woods with my dad.” To me, this is writing in its entirety. I will always write because it makes me happy, no matter the situation.
Being a second-year graduate student in the Creative Writing and Poetics MFA, I spend practically all of my time writing. Where I used to spend all my time reading, I am now able to explore the avenues of writing which most interest me. This helps me to not only feel comfortable engaging with my own material, but allows opportunity of growth in all areas of writing.
I focus on poetry within my own practice, but my undergraduate degree in Media and Communication Studies prepared me for all forms of written and verbal work. Writing is revising, and here at the WaCC I find myself helping all students with each and every aspect, from the beginning, all the way to the final-final-final draft.
The Writing and Communication Center is the perfect place for me because I get to be surrounded by writing all the time, and hopefully it’s a great place for whoever is reading this to come and get the help they need!
