{"id":38457,"date":"2026-10-29T11:55:09","date_gmt":"2026-10-29T18:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/stem\/?p=38457"},"modified":"2026-10-29T11:55:10","modified_gmt":"2026-10-29T18:55:10","slug":"witnessing-the-solar-eclipse-in-spain-through-study-abroad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/stem\/news\/2026\/10\/29\/witnessing-the-solar-eclipse-in-spain-through-study-abroad","title":{"rendered":"Witnessing the solar eclipse in Spain through study abroad"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A summer 2026 study abroad trip to Spain brought UW students together to learn about the science and art of solar eclipses \u2013 with a viewing of the eclipse on the final day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program, co-led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/faculty\/paola-rodriguez-hidalgo\/\">Dr. Paola Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo<\/a>, associate professor in the Department of Physical Sciences and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/faculty\/david-goldstein\/\">Dr. David Goldstein<\/a>, teaching professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences, included three courses: a Spanish language class, Introduction to Astronomy taught by Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo and an arts class about the eclipse through different contexts, taught by Goldstein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to their classes, the students visited a children\u2019s camp at a municipal observatory in Le\u00f3n before the eclipse occurred, teaching them basic astronomy and what to expect at the eclipse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also presented during a public viewing of the eclipse hosted by the European Space Agency, encountering thousands of visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who witnessed it in person, seeing the eclipse was almost an indescribable feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThough I am an astronomer, I study other far-away galaxies.
