Friday Harbor Laboratories

Do you know about the University of Washington's marine research facility located in Friday Harbor? Spend some time 75 miles northwest of the UW Bothell campus in the San Juan Islands while also earning credit towards your Biology degree requirements!

Why study at FHL?

  • Small Classes (20 students or less)
  • Coastal living, just a few steps away from the water
  • Hands-on learning both in the lab and out in the field
  • Opportunities to interact with marine scientists and learn about their research

Where will I live during the quarter?

Friday Harbor Labs feels like a marine biology summer camp! You will live in a group dorm or personal hut, and eat most meals at the campus dining hall.

How much does the program cost?

UW students attending Friday Harbor Labs pay similar tuition and fees as at UW Seattle and Bothell campuses.

Other expenses include lab, dining, and housing fees at prices similar to other UW campuses. Mary Gates Endowment Research Scholarships are available to qualified students taking research courses.

How do I apply?

Spring or autumn quarter: Fill out the online application and submit your transcripts.

Summer quarter: Fill out online application and submit your transcripts in addition to a letter of recommendation and written personal statement.

How can I make FHL credit fulfill my Biology major requirements?

Submit a petition on our Forms & Handouts page to request for coursework to count. You will need to include a detailed syllabus or other documentation of what your course or research experience covered.
