{"id":6472,"date":"2015-01-29T09:47:10","date_gmt":"2015-01-29T09:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=6472"},"modified":"2023-05-30T16:34:48","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T16:34:48","slug":"medical-emergency","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/safety\/are-you-ready\/medical-emergency","title":{"rendered":"Medical Emergency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\n\tMedical Emergency Guide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\n\tWhat is the situation?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tA co-worker, student or guest complains of feeling seriously unwell, collapses or is injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\n\tWhat should I do? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u00b7 Stay calm and assess the situation. Look for a Medic Alert bracelet or necklace on the person requiring help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u00b7 Have someone call 911. If you are alone, yell as loudly as possible for help. If you are unable to summon help, call 911 first then return and assist the person to the best of your ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u00b7 When calling 911, give the operator as much information as possible, i.e. type of emergency, what help is needed, exact address, building name, room number, telephone number, information from Medic Alert bracelet or necklace, and victim information. Don\u2019t hang up until you are told to do so by the 911 operator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u00b7 Provide first aid to the level you have been trained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u00b7 Do NOT attempt to move an injured person unless necessary to avoid further injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tIf the person is unconscious:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u00b7 Check for unresponsiveness. If there is no response, call 911 and THEN return to the victim. In most locations the emergency dispatcher can assist you with CPR instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\to    NOTE: This ratio is the same for one-person and two-person CPR. In two-person CPR the person pumping the chest stops while the other gives mouth-to-mouth breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\to     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tIf the person is bleeding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u00b7 Use rubber gloves (contained in the first aid kit) and apply pressure to the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u00b7 If possible, elevate bleeding area above the level of the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u00b7 There is a First Aid and CPR guide located in all first aid kits. These guides give detailed steps in the event of a heart attack, CPR and infant CPR, choking, bleeding, poisoning and burns, as well as other injuries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Medical Emergency Guide What is the situation?
