The final week has arrived and you have officially survived your first quarter as a college student! You’ve had a few classes, explored some topics and gotten a feel for campus life. So what’s next?
Check your grades:
After December 23rd, log into MyUW.
On the right hand side, click on ‘Grade Report.’
This can also be found on the left hand side by clicking on ‘Academics’ and then ‘Grades’.
Start thinking about possible topics that interest you. Are you talented in math? Are you fascinated by biology? Maybe you’re intrigued by psychology. Explore your interests, think about the classes you will be taking next quarter, and start to reflect on where your passions lie.
As you move into Winter Quarter, start thinking about which topics you’d like to learn more about. Come up with your top two choices and plan to take courses revolving around that topic in spring quarter.
If you’re not yet sure which topics to choose, continue to explore more courses during spring quarter and then reevaluate. Job shadowing is also a great way to explore career possibilities with no commitment to a career path. Most professionals will be more than happy to sit down and talk with you about their job (it’s also a great way to network). You may even discover new paths you didn’t know existed!
Your goal should be to choose two topics or subjects of interest by the end of your first year in college. This will give you time to explore your passions and choose a major during your second year. Talk with your FYPMP Advisors if you are not sure how to get started or need some extra ideas!
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call the FYPMP office! One of our Student Assistants will be more than glad to help you out. Our phone number is 425-352-3427. We are located in UW1-160 (It is not a room, but an open space).
