UW Bothell Collaboratory

The UW Bothell Collaboratory (formerly called Makerspace) is a creative environment with the equipment needed for curricular and co-curricular maker endeavors. Located on the first floor of Discovery Hall, the Collaboratory is a free resource for all UW Bothell students, faculty, and staff.* The lab is equipped with tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, a vinyl cutter, sewing machines and more.

Collaboratory Remodel - Fall Update

The Collaboratory remodel and upgrades are wrapping up according to plan! Construction is on-track to finish up by the end of December. We will spend late December and early January installing the equipment and settling in. Come check out the progress in December and join us for a grand opening event and introduction sessions when we're back in full swing in January.

Renovation Purpose and Plan:

In cooperation with Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Discovery Hall Makerspace/Collaboratory is being reimagined and redesigned to facilitate the following goals:

  • Improve power and ventilation infrastructure for existing Makerspace equipment
  • Support inter/cross disciplinary teams working on impactful projects of various duration with industry/community partners
  • Allow for students engaged in projects for formal courses as well as those engaged in co-curricular experiences to co-exist seamlessly
  • Ensure flexibility for changing initiatives
  • Allow visibility of work being performed while being inviting and welcoming to students of all interest levels

This project involves construction activities to combine Discovery Hall rooms 150 and 152 into one common space.

Digital Badges

New to the Collaboratory is the addition of Digital Badges! These badges are a form of digital credentialing that you can earn and show off as proof of your knowledge and experience in a specific topic, such as 3D printing. Upon request, a staff member can issue you a badge if you have completed each of the requirements for the badge. See our Digital Badges page for a list of all the current badges we have to offer.

Check out the UW Bothell Badgr page to see all the badges the Collaboratory, Herbarium, and other campus units have on offer. This site is where all your earned badges will be kept, so we recommend creating an account using a personal email so you will have access to your badges after graduating.

Student Staff and Volunteer opportunities

We are currently accepting applications for the Collaboratory Student Staff position! This position is a paid opportunity to work while you attend classes here at UW Bothell.

In this position, you will be working closely on a team with other student staff and the Collaboratory Space Manager to service students wanting to use the equipment and also keep the space well maintained and inviting. You will be taught how to use, operate, and maintain each of the Collaboratory machines so you may teach others who are new to the space. Other duties include organizing events, making decorations for the space, working with students on personal and academic projects, managing social media for the Collaboratory, and more. See more info and apply to the position here.

We are not accepting applications for volunteers at the moment, but this opportunity will return sometime after the renovations of the space are completed and new student staff are hired. Please consider the student staff position in the meantime.
