Through engaging coursework and applied learning, you will explore health equity, ethics, policy, quality improvement, healthcare systems, and the social factors that influence health outcomes. You will strengthen your skills in leadership, evidence-based practice, communication, and population health while developing the confidence to advocate for patients and communities, collaborate across healthcare settings, and contribute to meaningful improvements in nursing practice and patient care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program includes 100 hours of fieldwork experience, providing opportunities to apply your learning in real-world settings, develop practical population health programming skills, and engage with healthcare organizations and communities. The program culminates with a population health project that brings together your BSN-level knowledge, professional experience, and practicum to address a relevant nursing or healthcare issue. These hours are integrated into two courses; Translating Scholarly Knowledge to Nursing Practice<\/em> and Population-based Health in Community Practice<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Program Credits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing requires a total of 90 credits: 35 credits of core coursework and 10 elective credits; admitted students receive 45 credits for the completion of the NCLEX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Core Courses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The curriculum is based on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice<\/em> and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education<\/em>.     Learning Outcomes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    • Integrate concepts and ways of knowing from the arts and sciences in promoting health and managing nursing care across the wellness-illness continuum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Demonstrate value-based professional behaviors that integrate empathy, autonomy, integrity, social justice, and equity as well as respect for diversity and inclusion, human rights, and human dignity through cultivating partnerships with patients, families, and communities. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Deliver and advocate for health equity through health promotion, care coordination and disease prevention strategies at the individual, family, community, and population levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Apply leadership concepts, skills, and decision-making in the provision and oversight of nursing practice in a variety of settings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Appraise, critically summarize and translate current evidence into nursing practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Demonstrate integration of nursing scholarship, critical thinking, clinical decision-making, and psychomotor skills necessary for the delivery of competent, safe, evidence-based, holistic, compassionate and high-quality care to individuals, families, communities and populations across the lifespan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Translate principles of safety and quality improvement into the delivery of high-quality care to individuals, families, communities, and populations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Utilize information, communication, and patient care technology tools to facilitate clinical decision-making and the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality nursing care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Demonstrate effective professional communication and collaboration within and across disciplines and with the public to optimize health outcomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Demonstrate an understanding of how health policy, economic, legal, political, and socio-cultural factors influence the delivery of and advocacy for equitable health care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Demonstrate critical interrogation of positionality, recognition of implicit biases, as well as knowledge and application of anti-racism principles to promote health equity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Fieldwork Participation <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Before beginning the fieldwork course, Population-Based Health in Community Practice<\/em>, students must complete and maintain required immunizations, health screenings, safety training, and professional requirements. Requirements include COVID-19, Hepatitis B, MMR, Varicella, TB, TDaP, and seasonal influenza immunizations and screenings; an active, unencumbered RN license; American Heart Association BLS\/CPR certification; UW School of Nursing HIPAA training; an annual background check and criminal disclosure; and required policy acknowledgments and authorization forms completed through the program\u2019s designated compliance system. Fees apply. These requirements were created with our community partners and may be stricter than individual healthcare employers. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Philosophy of undergraduate education\u200b<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The Nursing faculty believes that the purpose of university-based undergraduate healthcare education is to prepare healthcare professionals whose practice is informed by theory and research. The philosophy of the undergraduate curriculum is rooted in values of excellence, diversity, community, social justice, integrity, and creativity. Preparation for the various roles in practice requires knowledge of the arts, sciences, and humanities, together with content and processes specific to the discipline. An interdisciplinary emphasis engages students in a broad range of ideas and knowledge.
