Dr. Dworkin is trained as a social scientist and received her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. She previously worked at the UCSF School of Nursing in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department and the Columbia University School of Medicine in Behavioral Health. Her research focuses on intersectionality and health, community health programs and interventions, structural interventions, and masculinities-based work with men to improve multiple health outcomes, including sexual health. She also does research in the area of sport, fitness, media\/culture, bodies and health. She has carried out research both domestically and globally. Most of her work is community-engaged, focused on health and social justice, and interdisciplinary. Dr. Dworkin is the previous Dean of the School of Nursing and Health (2017-2022) and was the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the UCSF School of Nursing (2014-2017). Some of the courses she teaches include\u00a0Research Methods<\/em>,\u00a0Social Determinants of Health<\/em>,\u00a0Masculinities and Men\u2019s Health<\/em>,\u00a0Media, Bodies and Health<\/em>,\u00a0Intersectionality and Health<\/em>\u00a0and the Master\u2019s level\u00a0Capstone<\/em>\u00a0courses in Health Studies. She has published 4 books and over 100 journal articles on the topics above and is the Associate Editor at the\u00a0Archives of Sexual Behavior<\/em>\u00a0and Consulting Editor for the\u00a0Journal of Sex Research<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scholarship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Dworkin\u2019s research portfolio focuses on gender relations and HIV prevention, treatment and care in the U.S, Kenya, and South Africa. She has expertise in masculinities focused gender-transformative health interventions with men to reduce HIV and violence risks and to improve HIV care and treatment outcomes. Recently, her gender-transformative work shifted to a focus on improving male involvement in family planning outcomes. She also carries out critical media analyses on gender, race, health and the body. She is the author of Body Panic: Gender, Health and the Selling of Fitness (2009, NYU Press). She is the author of Men at Risk: Masculinity, Heterosexuality and HIV Prevention (2015, NYU Press), and is the lead executive Editor of Women\u2019s and Empowerment and Global Health: A 21st Century Agenda (2016, University of California Press). She has published approximately 100 journal articles; published venues include: American Journal of Public Health, AIDS & Behavior, the Archives of Sexual Behavior, the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, AIDS Care, the Journal of Sex Research, AIDS Education and Prevention, AIDS Patient Care & STDs, Culture, Health and Sexuality, Social Science & Medicine, AIDS and JAIDS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
