Health Studies alum, Shugla Kakar is featured in the campus news this week. Before graduating, Kakar was the student body president, earned the 2020 University of Washington Bothell Chancellor's Medal, was named one of the Husky 100, and led the Muslim Student Association.  

In response to the coronavirus, Mary Cowan (Health Studies '17) and her team in the Yakima Health District were shifted from their normal duties to a technical assistance strike team.  Cowan credits the Health Studies program with preparing her for working at the supervisory level.

George Ahearn, BSN '00, founded EastWest Food Rescue, bringing food that would have gone to waste in Eastern Washington to distribute to local food banks.  In cooperation with community partners, EastWest Food Rescue has saved over 6,800,000 pounds of food and served more than 1,500,00 meals. 

The UW School of Nursing has been selected as the first academic partner in the United States to bestow the Queen Silvia Nursing Award (QSNA) for dementia care.  

Practicing registered nurses who have graduated from any of the three University of Washington nursing programs (UW Seattle, UW Bothell, or UW Tacoma) with a bachelor’s of science in nursing degree and current UW undergraduate student nurses may apply for the scholarship online through November 6, 2020.

*Applications must include an idea or solution to addressing COVID-19 challenges in healthcare environment and special merit will be given for submissions that focus on the well-being of elderly and dementia-diagnosed communities.*

June Altaras, who received her BSN in '98 and her MN in '07 from SNHS, became the operations chief at a COVID-19 command center.
