Everyone on campus had to pivot when the coronavirus forced the University of Washington Bothell into remote operations, but one of the biggest twists may have been how a planned study abroad trip to India turned into a virtual internship program.

When UW Bothell students collaborated on a writing project with a group at the Latino Educational Training Institute, it wasn’t long before they were sharing recipes. The result was a remote potluck that nonetheless had the feel of an intimate family dinner.

This year the University of Washington Bothell Resilient Visions film festival is going both virtual and international, partnering with the Asian American Television station in Washington state and Jinan University in China.

Making the most of her time, Mariah Crystal (Master of Arts in Policy Studies ’10) was able to conduct much of her Fulbright research in Namibia before she was told to return home because of the coronavirus pandemic. 

An expert from the University of Washington Bothell on the culture, economics and politics of chocolate, Kristy Leissle is currently living in West Africa to conduct field work with cocoa growers for her next book on Africa’s contributions to chocolate.
