When she arrived at\u00a0the University of Washington\u00a0Bothell to earn her bachelor\u2019s degree in Nursing, Lisa Levinson had already\u00a0worked\u00a0for 15 years as\u00a0a professional nurse in clinical, research\u00a0and leadership settings.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t need to pursue my bachelor\u2019s, but I wanted to,\u201d she said. \u201cI had the clinical experience but lacked the understanding and appreciation for the processes needed in order to drive change.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon after beginning classes in the School of Nursing & Health Studies<\/a>, light bulbs started going off for Levinson. She saw how the program would connect the dots between evidence-based processes, behavior motivation and big-picture decisions such as resource allocation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A week into the BSN program<\/a>, she thought, \u201cOh my gosh. What have I been doing without this?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing the benefits of discomfort<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On top of a full courseload and a full-time leadership role at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center, Levinson also juggled family responsibilities. That\u2019s why, when the opportunity arose to do a summer course culminating in a trip to India, she hesitated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI had every excuse not to pursue it,\u201d she said. Among them: \u201cI\u2019m too old, I\u2019m a mom, I have no business doing this.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was her nine-year-old son who helped change her mind. \u201cHe said he would be proud if I did it, and so I said, \u2018Okay, that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to do.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A two-week trip to India might pose some discomforts, but Levinson reflected on the occasional necessity of being uncomfortable \u2014 both for growth and for a change of perspective. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With family support and a scholarship in place, Levinson enrolled in India: Population Health in a Cultural Context.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gaining a global perspective<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The program kicked off with an\u00a0on-campus summer class, its cohort comprised\u00a0of\u00a015\u00a0working professionals. Levinson was\u00a0impressed with\u00a0the faculty\u2019s\u00a0uncanny\u00a0ability to track everyone\u2019s nursing specialties \u2014\u00a0which ranged from public health to pediatrics \u2014\u00a0and\u00a0use\u00a0that information to enrich the class.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr.\u00a0Linda Eaton, associate professor,\u00a0and\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Jamie Shirley, teaching professor, led the program. \u201cThey both knew all my peers,\u201d said\u00a0Levinson. \u201cThey\u00a0validated and valued each of our own experiences as working\u00a0nurses and incorporated\u00a0them\u00a0into class discussions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\u00a0August\u00a02025, the cohort\u00a0traveled\u00a0to\u00a0the southern\u00a0Indian\u00a0city of Vellore. Under the auspices of the Christian Medical College,\u00a0the\u00a0UW Bothell students\u00a0observed\u00a0the Indian healthcare system in action. They accompanied local nurses on\u00a0visits to a nearby village, where they supported community engagement and health promotion activities in clinics,\u00a0daycares,\u00a0schools\u00a0and a senior center.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was an amazing opportunity to be in India for an extended period of time,\u201d\u00a0Levinson said. \u201cThere was a lot of work\u00a0done\u00a0to ensure we had a cultural\u00a0understanding of life in Southern India\u00a0and the history but also to see present-day healthcare and how things are functioning.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preparing for big opportunities<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A seasoned traveler, Levinson was nonetheless overwhelmed at times by the sights, sounds and smells of Indian village life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt affected me in ways I probably don\u2019t recognize yet,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m a Type A-prepared person, but the situations you can\u2019t prepare for can offer you the biggest opportunities.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eaton, who has\u00a0co-led the\u00a0UW trip to\u00a0India four times,\u00a0echoed that sentiment. She\u00a0observed\u00a0that the things that tend to\u00a0unnerve\u00a0students the most\u00a0\u2014 the\u00a0sensory overwhelm, the lack of resources \u2014 often prompt the deepest reflections.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She praised Levinson\u2019s\u00a0comportment\u00a0while in Vellore. \u201cLisa\u00a0always approached her experience in India with openness, humility and a strong reflective mindset,\u201d Eaton\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cShe\u00a0also demonstrated genuine curiosity about practices that differed from her prior professional experience.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A longtime diabetes care and education specialist, Levinson completed her bachelor\u2019s degree after the trip to India. The program was such a positive experience, she said, that she immediately enrolled for her graduate degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paying it forward next<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This summer, she embarked on another study abroad program, this time to investigate health promotion in Ireland. She plans to graduate with her Master of Nursing in June 2027. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As cancer diagnoses continue to rise in the U.S., Levinson sees an opportunity to expand her professional role in oncology-related wellness and prevention. She also wants to support the next generation of nurses. \u201cHow can I foster growth and offer encouragement?\u201d she asked. \u201cWhat can I do for nurses new to the workforce?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for\u00a0seasoned professionals\u00a0pondering\u00a0a\u00a0nursing\u00a0degree at UW Bothell, she offered clear advice: \u201cJust do it. Don\u2019t\u00a0even think about it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo make yourself most marketable,\u00a0to\u00a0be in a position to best serve patients, having a bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s is really setting you up to do that most effectively.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
