{"id":34176,"date":"2026-07-09T19:27:48","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T02:27:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=34176"},"modified":"2026-07-09T19:32:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T02:32:00","slug":"dedicated-to-creating-transformative-learning-experiences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2026\/07\/09\/dedicated-to-creating-transformative-learning-experiences","title":{"rendered":"Dedicated to creating \u2018transformative\u2019 learning experiences\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Despite attending junior high and early high school in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dr. Georgia Roberts had never heard of the University of California Berkeley until one of her community college professors recommended she apply.\u00a0As a first-generation student, she also\u202fdidn\u2019t\u202fknow what a Ph.D. was until she was already in college.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roberts never pictured herself going into academia.\u202fIt\u202fwasn\u2019t\u202funtil she was working on her doctorate in English at the University of Washington that she first realized it\u00a0could be\u00a0her dream career.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Roberts serves as a lecturer\u00a0in\u00a0UW Bothell\u2019s\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/\">School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences,<\/a> where her educational journey plays a huge part in her pedagogy \u2014 as well as her relationship with students and fellow faculty members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For her \u201cdedication to creating transformative learning experiences,\u201d Roberts was recently named the recipient of UW Bothell\u2019s\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/academic-affairs\/awards\/dta\">2026 Distinguished Teaching Award<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pursuing&nbsp;knowledge<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In her early 20s, Roberts worked various jobs and at 24 decided to take a drama class at a community college\u202fas a way to\u202fmeet people. She enjoyed it so much she continued taking classes and eventually transferred to Berkeley, where she majored in English.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was there that she met the person who would have the biggest impact on her education \u2014 and her lifelong passion for learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Ronald Takaki was a phenomenal storyteller. He made history seem completely alive and relevant,\u201d she said. \u201cHis Intro to Ethnic Studies was a profound class for me in a lot of ways, and one of the reasons I decided to minor in Ethnic Studies. He became the sole inspiration for me to want to study history in a more dedicated, serious way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I didn\u2019t know at the time that I was going to end up teaching, I just knew I had a lot to learn.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her pursuit of knowledge led her to UW Bothell, where she teaches a range of classes \u2014 from literature to ethnic studies.&nbsp;This fall will mark her 20th year with the campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Being nimble<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a lecturer, Roberts is sometimes asked to cover courses for other faculty members and enjoys putting her own spin on the curriculum \u2014 often weaving in pop culture themes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRoberts\u2019 capacity to teach from the 100- to the 500-level is remarkable. Not only does she possess a pedagogical nimbleness that allows her to create developmentally appropriate syllabi and assignments across the student lifespan, but Roberts also understands how to build classroom community while discussing difficult topics,\u201d wrote Dr. Alice Pedersen, associate teaching professor in the School of IAS, in her nomination letter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Georgia Roberts is a tremendous instructor who has\u202fimpacted\u202fthe lives of thousands of UW\u202fBothell students. Over the past decade, she has come to be known as a veteran instructor who\u202fremains\u202fdeeply committed\u202fto\u202fand skilled in creating connection,\u202fmeaning\u202fand change in students\u2019 lives.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roberts is also known as a mentor to her fellow IAS instructors, Pedersen noted. \u201cShe is truly a teacher\u2019s teacher.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inspired by interdisciplinarity<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In many of the courses she has created, Roberts centers her own niche passion for \u201cthe nexus of literature and hip hop.\u201d She\u00a0has a particular affinity for the Tupac Shakur,\u00a0noting\u00a0that \u201cthere\u2019s a running joke that I can make any class a Tupac class.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first classes she taught&nbsp;at UW Bothell&nbsp;was on \u201cEngaging Literary Arts: The Literary Legacy of Tupac Shakur.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I would have gone on to complete my doctorate if not for that class,\u201d Roberts said, \u201cbecause it absolutely opened up my eyes to what interdisciplinarity could look like.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The class proved especially meaningful for Brad Bomberry, an Indigenous military veteran who graduated with a degree in Science, Technology &amp; Society\u202fin June 2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAmong the many\u202fcourses\u202fI have taken, none have impacted me as deeply as those taught by Professor Roberts,\u201d he wrote in his\u00a0award\u00a0nomination letter. \u201cHer ability to draw parallels between Tupac\u2019s work and the ways marginalized communities resist oppression and preserve identity encouraged me to reflect on my experiences and those of my community &#8230;\u00a0Her commitment to the subject inspired us to see the material as more than an academic exercise. It became a way to better understand the world around us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Belonging in the classroom<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout her teaching, Roberts&nbsp;said she&nbsp;aims to be transparent about her own educational journey in the hope that&nbsp;other&nbsp;first-generation and nontraditional students&nbsp;believe&nbsp;that they, too, belong in the classroom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the priorities in my own pedagogy is to remain approachable, and that looks different in every situation,\u201d she said. \u201cSometimes it requires me to be vulnerable about my own path through education. My path was just messier and not linear. I try to be as open about that as possible so that I can be useful to students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roberts\u2019 teaching method inspired\u00a0Annika Cho Norheim\u00a0to major in Interdisciplinary Studies. She graduated\u00a0from UW Bothell\u00a0summa cum laude in 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a new student, I was balancing three jobs while caring for my family and dealing with internal struggles with my place sometimes in the classroom. I was nervous about entering a higher academic setting, so I am thankful to professors like Professor Roberts for providing an open and safe academic space,\u201d she wrote in her nomination letter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe inspired me to think of my education and myself differently, that putting my academia first may not require much strain \u2014 I could find something beautiful in myself and my ability to learn and produce substantial work, and I can keep looking for answers in the most unique places.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;Her commitment to the subject inspired us to see the material as more than an academic exercise.
