Each year, the University of Washington Bothell recognizes two student civic leaders with the Chancellor\u2019s Student Civic Leadership Awards<\/a>. Sponsored by the Washington Campus Coalition for the Public Good, this award acknowledges students who address critical issues on campus and in their communities through service and social entrepreneurship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

UW Bothell Chancellor Kristin G. Esterberg announced that the 2026 recipients are Aamena Ellithy (Law, Economics & Public Policy \u201926) and Alondra Guzman (Educational Studies \u201926). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A voice for the community<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Early on, Aamena Ellithy got into the habit of being proactive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI developed a mentality of not waiting\u00a0until someone asks you to do something,\u201d she said, \u201cbut looking out and seeing what needs to be done and stepping up.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over\u00a0three\u00a0academic\u00a0quarters\u00a0at UW Bothell, she chaired the Student Technology Fee Committee, which evaluates proposals for innovative technology projects on campus. It was complicated work, Ellithy said, demanding a nuanced understanding of budgets, decision-making\u00a0and institutional complexities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLeading a team responsible for allocating a record-breaking $2 million in student-proposed projects taught me how to make collaborative, transparent decisions that directly benefit the student body,\u201d she said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outreach and dialogue<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ellithy\u00a0also built solid relationships with students and staff across campus \u2014 connections that would prove vital to her advocacy work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she learned that UW Bothell\u2019s multi-faith reflection room, which she relied on as \u201ca cherished space for Muslim students\u2019 daily prayers,\u201d had been moved to a smaller, unworkable location, she swung into action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI realized I was in a position where I could benefit my community \u2014 including myself,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cI saw that I had all these opportunities and connections that could make a difference.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She mobilized other students and engaged in months of dialogue with UW Bothell leadership. Eventually, they helped secure a more suitable, organized space for Friday prayers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A broader sphere of influence<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beyond campus,\u00a0Ellithy\u00a0interned at\u00a0the Washington\u00a0chapter of the\u00a0Council on American-Islamic Relations, where she worked\u00a0on high-profile communications for an\u00a0annual event.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imraan Siddiqi,\u00a0CAIR-WA\u2019s\u00a0executive director,\u00a0noticed\u00a0Ellithy\u2019s energy and follow-through. \u201cHaving people who are driven and wanting to carve out a path for themselves in this world\u00a0\u2014\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0heartening to see that. We still consider her to be part of the CAIR family.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ellithy\u2019s\u00a0wide-ranging\u00a0curiosity\u00a0also\u00a0propelled\u00a0her to the\u00a0Global Scholars Program<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Washington, D.C.,\u00a0Human Rights Seminar<\/a>,\u00a0where she studied\u00a0the\u00a0impact of\u00a0U.S.\u00a0foreign policy interventions in Syria.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAamena\u00a0thoughtfully engaged concepts such as community-building, sitting with discomfort, intersectionality and supporting peers, often integrating these into her everyday practice,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Ben Gardner,\u00a0associate professor in the\u00a0School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0co-director of Global Scholars.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Added Natalia Dyba, director of global initiatives and co-director of Global Scholars, \u201cAamena\u2019s involvement helped her refine her understanding of political conflict and social\u00a0issues,\u00a0and\u00a0deepened her experiences in the D.C. Human Rights Seminar.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next-level recognition<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A statewide runner-up for the\u00a0Governor\u2019s Student Civic Leadership Award<\/a>, Ellithy\u00a0took on many other roles,\u00a0from president of the Law Society\u00a0at UW Bothell\u00a0to\u00a0member of the\u00a0NextGen Civic Leaders Corps.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u00a0also\u00a0was a\u00a02026\u00a0legislative intern\u00a0in Olympia\u00a0and, with\u00a0fellow student Boushra Tanvir, created the Husky Voice app.\u00a0Their\u00a0goal: Raise student voices and increase civic participation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With her degree in hand, Ellithy plans to take a gap year, then attend law school.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She embraced the chancellor\u2019s leadership award as a testament to her passion for civic engagement. \u201cIt means the work I did on campus means something and is valuable,\u201d she said. \u201cFor a lot of other people to recognize this validates it and makes it worth it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A catalyst for connection<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Alondra Guzman learned\u00a0she\u2019d\u00a0received\u00a0the Chancellor\u2019s Student Civic Leadership Award, she first thought that she\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0deserve it. Imposter syndrome had a fierce grip, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRecognizing I got it was hard at first,\u201d she said, \u201cbut then I realized, I\u2019m representing myself, my family and my community, which are\u00a0my\u00a0biggest things in life.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0so great that my classmates,\u00a0advisers\u00a0and professors see me as a leader.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guzman\u00a0said her\u00a0early days at UW Bothell as a\u00a0first-generation Latina college student\u00a0were difficult. She recalled feeling lonely, with no community or family to show her the ropes. But then she found her catalyst for connection: the\u00a0Latino Leadership Initiative<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this dynamic cohort,\u00a0she\u00a0spearheaded an \u201cEquity in Education\u201d event that opened her eyes to both a deficit and an opportunity.\u00a0\u201cThere are legislators making policies who haven\u2019t stepped into a classroom,\u201d Guzman realized. \u201cHow can I bridge that gap?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was hired\u00a0the next year\u00a0as the student assistant for the\u00a0LLI, mentoring other students and creating spaces where they could feel seen, supported and empowered. \u201cAlondra is a compassionate leader and advocate for strong educational success,\u201d said Dana Washington,\u00a0program manager for\u00a0community-engaged learning. \u201cHer ability to take initiative and support her peers is what led to her being hired in the Office of Connected Learning<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big-picture perspective<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Throughout her time at UW Bothell, Guzman worked to\u00a0blend\u00a0her commitment to civic advocacy with her passion for teaching.\u00a0The\u00a0Martinez Fellowship\u00a0through the Technology Access Foundation\u00a0was the perfect proving ground: With a cohort of fellow BIPOC educators, she learned the importance of both building\u00a0an equitable\u00a0classroom and taking care of herself.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guzman also became a Washington Education Association Scholar, where she built community with teachers statewide and honed her ability to weave advocacy, teaching and leadership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlondra thinks critically\u202fabout broader systemic changes within our education system,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Nathanie Lee, an\u00a0associate teaching professor\u00a0in the\u00a0School of Educational Studies<\/a>\u00a0who advised Guzman\u2019s WEA Scholar cohort, \u201cbut it is within the classroom where she can enact some of those changes little by little.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a lot to juggle for someone who is taking courses, student teaching in a classroom all day, and going above and beyond to be a leader in her school and community.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From ASUWB to a national stage<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Guzman also served as a\u00a0student\u00a0senator for\u00a0the Associated Students of UW Bothell. She\u00a0traveled to Olympia to lobby for higher education\u00a0policies at the annual Huskies on the Hill event, which then\u00a0put her on a path to Washington, D.C., which she visited twice in two years\u00a0as a policy advocator for the Friends Committee on National Legislation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her mission: Lobby for measures that put people first. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The time in D.C.\u00a0was especially meaningful to Guzman,\u00a0in part because many of her mixed-status family members can\u2019t\u00a0travel. \u201cStanding in front of monuments, in front of legislators and staffers,\u201d she said, \u201cI do this for my mom, who came here from Mexico for a better life for her and her children.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
